These features are within finds area NHER 1544. There are a series of fragmentary linear ditches covering the central and western part of the area (S1) which probably represent land and field boundaries. The features are largely aligned in north to south, east to west and northwest to southeast directions. The irregular nature and multiple alignment of the ditches may indicate a multi-phase system of land division. There is a possible sub-rounded enclosure at TF 6814 3456, and possible rectangular enclosures or fields at TF 6810 3457 and TF 6803 3453. Curiously theses features were not detected during a watching brief on the stripping for the A149 Snettisham by-pass, which passed through the centre of the site. There are three larger and better defined north to south aligned linear feature in the eastern part of the area. The western feature appears as a ditch while the eastern two features appear to be banks or banks and ditches. These features may be later than the other cropmarks, and may represent a medieval or post medieval system of land division.
These linear features and enclosures may well be multi-period, although it is suggested that the majority of these features date from the Roman period, contemporary with similar systems within the area (NHER 26634 and 28450).
M. Brennand (NMP), 5 July 2003.
