Full Description
The Wellington Pier dates from 1853, and was designed by Peter Ashcroft, an engineer of the Eastern Counties Railway. It was largely rebuilt in 1900 when it was purchased by the Borough, and a pavilion by J.W. Cockrill was added in 1903. Cockrill's work was reclad in the 1950s, and his decorative panels were removed.
The entrance to the pier was added in 1926, and was designed by the Borough Surveyor, S.P. Thompson.
See (S1) in file detailing proposed restoration of the copper domed roofs of the two towers.
Information from (S2).
A. Cattermole (NLA), 31 October 2005.
Cockerill’s work, which was based on contemporary European design, was constructed in prefabricated asbestos-based Uralite.
