Summary

Possible remains of the medieval city wall (NHER 384)and a number of Victorian culverts and post-medieval or modern rubbish pits were observed during installation of a new water main in King Street. The groundworks passed through the area where the medieval King Street gate (NHER 26131) once stood, one of twelve entrances that pierced the city wall (NHER 384). The probable cut of the city wall was observed but this had been robbed of any remaining masonry.
