Summary

In 1961 work on the north bank of the River Yare recovered a number of Roman pottery sherds, a complete pot, as well as a variety of animal bones and deer tine. Of particularly interest are the remains of a possible wharf or bridge approach that was also noted, as well as Roman roof tiles and brick, and part of a human skull.

Map

May 1961. While digging hole on north bank of River Yare below junction of River Yare and Wensum about 16ft (4.9m) below top of river bank and 12ft (3.7m) below marsh level for gas pipe line under river.
Roman sherds, complete pot, ox, pig, sheep, horse and ?dog bones and deer tine on timber platform (three three branches one way and two below at an angle).
Possible Wharf or bridge approach.
Also Roman roof tiles and brick, part of human skull.
Mid 1st century - mid 2nd century.

Material includes: floor tiles (two with imprint of dog's paw), roof tiles (one dozen tegulae and three imbrices). Sherds of three amphorae. Nine sherds Samian Ware, one sherd hand-made ware.
Sherds of flagons and bowls, one mortarium, spout of ?feeding bottle.
Four sherds of Gallo-Belgic ware.
