Summary

Excavations here in 1957 revealed refuse pits and hearths that indicated occupation from the Late Saxon period to the medieval period and later. Numerous artefacts were retrieved and these included a Late Saxon bone draughtsman, medieval stonework and window glass as well as bronze scale and iron slag.

1957. Digging foundations for new Post Office revealed refuse pits and hearths.
Occupation from Late Saxon to medieval and later.
Late Saxon pottery, bone draughtsman, bone comb, 14th century stonework and window glass, 15th century bronze scale from Hearth III approximately 3.1m (10ft) below street level.
Iron slag.
Excavation by D.R. Howlett 1957.
