Summary

Extensive multi-period cropmarks, dominated by at least three distinct phases of field system and/or enclosures, are visible on aerial photographs. They surround Harrison’s Farm, where medieval to post-medieval remains have been found (NHER 28823 and 39917), and lie immediately to the west of the supposed site of the former village of Oby (NHER 8607). The earliest elements of the cropmark site could date to the prehistoric period (but presumably no earlier than the Bronze Age), while at least one phase may be associated with the site of a possible Iron Age to Roman period farmstead visible immediately to the north (NHER 45060). Later elements are likely to be of medieval to post medieval date. Where visible, distinct phases of the site have been recorded individually, as NHER 14395, 49408 and 49409.

Map

May 2007. Norfolk NMP.
Extensive multi-period cropmarks are visible on aerial photographs (S1)-(S7), centred at TG 4104 1484. They are dominated by at least three distinct phases of field systems and/or enclosures, distinguishable by their orientation and layout, which have been recorded individually as NHER 14395, 49408 and 49409. They may range in date from the Bronze Age to the post medieval period, and cover an area measuring approximately 1050m by 880m.

It should be noted that due to a paucity of control points, the rectification of many of the oblique aerial photographs of the site was very poor, and this has almost certainly had an adverse effect on the accuracy of the mapping. In addition, as well as the archaeological cropmarks, a variety of agricultural and geological marks are visible, including the polygonal marks of possible frost cracks. Where readily identifiable these have not been mapped, but some may have been mistaken for possible archaeological features, such as the sinuous linear marks visible at TG 4092 1491.
