Summary

Fragmentary cropmarks representing the remains of an undated field system are visible on aerial photographs. They form one phase of a larger multi-period cropmark site (NHER 49407). Their date is unknown, but they might have originated in the prehistoric period, or be associated with the farmstead or villa of probable Iron Age and/or Roman date visible to their northeast (NHER 45060).

Map

May 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The fragmentary cropmarks of a field system are visible on aerial photographs (S1)-(S5), centred at TG 4090 1490 but predominantly visible across the northern part of the area. They appear to form a single phase of activity within a larger multi-period cropmark site (NHER 49407), distinguishable due to their shared orientation and layout, which is broadly coaxial. Their date is unknown, but an origin in the prehistoric (i.e. Bronze Age or Iron Age) period or during the Roman period is plausible, and they may have been associated with the farmstead or villa of probable Iron Age and/or Roman date visible to their northeast (NHER 45060). Certainly, they bear little resemblance to the field system of probable post-Roman date visible to their south (part of NHER 14395); whether they are earlier or later than the field system and enclosures recorded as NHER 49408, with which they overlap, is not known.

It should be noted that due to a paucity of control points, the rectification of many of the oblique aerial photographs of the site was very poor, and this almost certainly had an adverse effect on the accuracy of the mapping.
