Summary

In 1949 three medieval wells were discovered during clearance of the site for the erection of main girders. Each well had been infilled with a variety of materials including pottery sherds, stained glass, Purbeck marble mortar and animal bones.

1949. In clearing site for erection of main girders.
Wells cut into chalk discovered. Three examined but not excavated by staff of NRC.
1) Well 1. Near Exchange Street, side. Late 13th century pottery glazed baluster jug revealed at 4.3m (14ft) below road level. 1.2-1.5m (4ft-5ft) diameter.
2) Well 2. South side of site 3ft6in diameter mixed pottery, late medieval to 17th century; stained glass; Purbeck marble mortar. Mainly 0-2.4m (0ft-8ft); spur of cock. 15th century French jetton and sacking at 3.6m (12ft).
3) Well 3. West of Well 2, 1.68m (5ft 6in) diameter. At 2.4m (8ft) Elizabethan and Jacobean pottery; medieval and Late Saxon fragments. 15th century French jetton; sheep and pig bones.
