Summary

A rapid earthwork survey of Sheringham Wood identified twelve segments of the former boundary bank. The surviving segments largely appear to coincide with the boundaries depicted on early 19th century maps, prior to landscaping carried out by Repton for the creation of Sheringham Park (NHER 22881). Several of the bank segments on the southern edge of the wood form part of the boundary of a trackway, and the eastern edge of the wood is defined by a former road from Sheringham to Holt depicted on maps prior to the creation of Sheringham Park.

Map

January 2008. Earthwork Survey.
A rapid earthwork survey of Sheringham Park identified twelve segments of the former boundary bank. The surviving segments measured 2m-5m wide by 0.4m-1.0m high and largely appear to coincide with the boundaries depicted on early 19th century maps, prior to landscaping carried out by Repton for the creation of Sheringham Park (NHER 22881). Several of the bank segments on the southern edge of the wood form part of the boundary of a trackway depicted on early 19th century maps, and the eastern edge of the wood is defined by a former road from Sheringham to Holt depicted on maps prior to the creation of Sheringham Park. The south-eastern end of the segment from TG 1371 4161 to TG 1394 4132 continues outside the line previously interpreted as the edge of the ancient woodland. The north-western edge of the wood also appears to have extended beyond the previously noted boundary. Three segments of possible bank have been identified beyond the present fence, running from TG 1360 4178 - TG 1386 4169, TG 1346 4195 - TG 1355 4189, and TG 1333 4206 - TG 1344 4199.
The areas known as The Belt and Bodham Covert which form the south-western extent of the present wood are depicted as non-wooded enclosures in maps drawn prior to 1826 and therefore were not surveyed.
