Summary

An area of potential ancient woodland within Sheringham Park (NHER 22881). The extent of this woodland remains uncertain. Areas known as The Belt and Bodham Covert which form the south-western extent of the present wood are depicted as non-wooded enclosures in maps drawn prior to 1826 and therefore are not now considered part of the ancient wood. A rapid earthwork survey of the wood in 2008 identified remnants of the former wood boundary around the majority of its circumference (NHER 51369), confirming its extent. Other features identified within the wood include extraction pits, hollow ways, and a saw mill.

January 2008. Earthwork Rapid Identification Survey.
Sheringham Wood Sites 1-24.
A rapid earthwork survey of Sheringham Wood identified twelve segments of the former wood boundary (NHER 51369) as well as a possible internal boundary (NHER 51361) and an external bank which may be contemporary with the ancient woodland (NHER 51371). Three of the identified segments of the wood bank are located beyond the previously determined north-western edge of the wood. Documentary research verified that the areas known as The Belt, and Bodham Covert which form the south-western extent of the present wood are depicted as non-wooded enclosures in maps drawn prior to 1826 and therefore were not surveyed.
Other features identified within the Sheringham Wood include extraction pits (NHER 51363, NHER 51364, NHER 51366, NHER 51367), possible hollow ways (NHER 51362 and NHER 51365), and a saw mill (NHER 51368). An additional hollow way was identified to the southeast of Sheringham Wood (NHER 51370).
