Summary

A rectilinear cropmark representing a possible enclosure ditch feature was visible on aerial photographs. It is one of a number of similar features in the vicinity (NHER 51913, 51914), and may relate to medieval or post medieval activity, as ‘kilns’ are marked on Bryant’s 1826 Map of Norfolk in this area. It is also on a similar alignment to the medieval to post medieval farmstead recorded as NHER 45126, 2.8km to the northeast.

Map

November 2008. Norfolk NMP.
A cropmark of a rectilinear enclosure ditch possibly relating to a medieval to post medieval field boundary or enclosure ditch is visible on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2) at TG 2700 1003. An area of ‘kilns’ is marked on Bryant’s 1826 Map of Norfolk in this area. The enclosure, which measures approximately 40m by 20m internally, appears to have ditches on only three sides, although the ‘missing’ ditch on the southern side may simply represent masking of the archaeology due to the underlying geology.

The fact that this feature, and other similar features in the vicinity (NHER 51913, 51914) are oriented on a similar alignment to the rectilinear enclosures recorded as NHER 45126, 2.8km to the northeast, has lead to a tentative medieval to post medieval date for these features.
