Full Description
November 2008. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of a rectilinear enclosure probably relating to medieval to post medieval field boundaries or enclosure ditches, and a possible trackway are visible on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2) at TG 2705 0985. An area of ‘kilns’ is marked on Bryant’s 1826 Map of Norfolk in this area.
The possible enclosure measures approximately 28m by 20m internally, and appears to have ditches on only three sides, although the ‘missing’ ditch on the western side may simply represent masking of the archaeology due to the underlying geology. The enclosure, and other similar features in the vicinity (NHER 51912, 51913) are oriented on a similar alignment to the rectilinear enclosures recorded as NHER 45126, 2.8km to the northeast, and have therefore been tentatively dated to the medieval to post medieval period.
The possible trackway, situated to the northwest, is made up of two parallel ditches aligned northeast-southwest, approximately 8m apart. It does not follow the same alignment as the enclosure ditch, but appears to echo a similar pair of linear ditches 175m to the northeast (NHER 51913), which could possibly represent part of the same feature.
E. Bales (NMP), 11 November 2008.
