NHER 52490 (Cropmark and Earthwork record) - Site of probable field boundary and enclosure ditches of possible Iron Age to Roman date

Some of the cropmarks described below may have previously been recorded as part of NHER 9585.
Probable field boundary and enclosure ditches of possible Iron Age to Roman date are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S17), centred at TG 2434 0525. The relatively complex, heavily divided character of the cropmarks, and the presence of a possible ring ditch, perhaps a round house (at TG 2433 0521) are suggestive of settlement. They form part of a much larger area of such cropmarks, across which several phases of activity are apparent. Unfortunately, the density and complexity of these cropmarks as a whole is such that it is not possible to readily group elements together as a single phase. This has only been possible for the cropmarks recorded here, and those forming the overlapping site NHER 52491, which are of possible medieval to post medieval date, but even between these two relatively coherent areas there is considerable scope for confusion. It is notable that the orientation and character of the cropmarks described here is similar to that of other cropmarks of possible Iron Age to Roman date visible approximately 200m to the south (NHER 52263), and that Iron Age and Roman pottery has been recovered from the general area (NHER 9585).
