Full Description
2008 - 2009. Breckland warrens survey.
The boundary of the warren is evident as a low linear bank with the eastern, southern and western perimeters partly forming the parish boundaries. The banks are visible on the 1760 Terrier and an 1842 Estate map. The warren was owned by the Earls of Clere during the medieval period. After the Dissolution, the warren passed into the ownership of local families and was bought by tenant farmers in the 1960s and ploughed for arable.
The associated lodge (NHER 56219) is located at TF 7643 0742 and was converted during the Victorian period into a brick-built farm building for stabling horses and was in use until the mid-20th century. The site is now derelict.
See (S1-2).
S. Howard (HES), 17 May 2011.
April 2010. Field visit.
Earthwork banks marking the boundary of Beachamwell Warren survive as earthworks. They may also mark the boundary between Beachamwell and Swaffham parishes.
Three banks survive in the northern section observed (between TF 7766 0873 and TF 7786 0854). They were walked and recorded using a hand-held GPS unit. The eastern/outer bank is spread, up to 10m wide and has a ride on its line. The central bank is 6-8m wide and up to 0.3m high. The western/inner bank is 15m to the west of the central bank, 6-10m wide and up to 0.3m high.
One bank survives in the central section observed (approximately between TF 7793 0850 and TF 7816 0831). It is located to the west of a ride and was seen from a car.
Two banks survive in the southern section observed (approximately between TF 7835 0820 and TF 7854 0804). They are located to the west of a ride and were seen from a car.
D. Robertson (HES), 16 May 2011.
