Summary

A rapid earthwork identification survey in 2011 recorded a sub-circular pit. A subsequent desk-based survey identified the same feature as an earthwork on aerial photographs and imagery from a lidar survey. It was clear from its 'fresh' appearance on the 1940s aerial photographs that it was a pit or emplacement related to Second World War activity, rather than an extraction pit as initially thought. It forms part of an extensive spread of Second World War activity (NHER 61543) recorded across Thetford golf course and around Thetford Warren Lodge.

Map

August 2011. Walkover Survey.
Rapid earthwork identification survey.
A sub-circular depression up to 2m deep and around 8m in diameter is likely to be a former extraction pit.
See report (S1) for further details.

February 2017. 'Brecks from Above' and Breckland National Mapping Programme.
The pit or depression described above is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs, such as (S2), and lidar imagery (S3). It is clear from its 'fresh' appearance on the 1940s aerial photographs that it is a Second World War pit or emplacement, rather than an extraction pit as previously suggested. It is one of four such pits located in close proximity to each other (see too NHER 58284), together with a slit trench; their size is such that they could perhaps be emplacements from an anti-aircraft battery, or have been used for training related to such sites. The pits form part of a much more extensive spread of Second World War activity, recorded as NHER 61543.
The mapped extent of this site has been refined [1].
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 10 February 2017.
