Summary

A timber-framed, weatherboard clad, thatched barn consisting of ten bays. Suggested construction dates for this building have ranged from the 17th century to around 1800, but this confusion may be due to the recycling of timber. Bays one to five were constructed with re-used timbers which date sometime between 1550 and 1700. It has been suggested that the timbers may have come from Roudham Hall (NHER 58775), which was extensively rebuilt in the second half of the 18th century. This suggestion and the later construction date for the barn is supported by the absence of the barn on a late 18th century plan of the estate.

Map

November 1976. Building Survey.
A timber-framed, weatherboard clad, thatched barn consisting of ten bays. Bays one to five were constructed with re-used timbers. Bay three originally contained through barn doors, and at the time of this survey there were two double doors and one blocked door.Later floors have been inserted into Bays 5, 6, and part of Bay 7 as well as in Bays 9 and 10. Many alterations are evident. Two moulded beams were found: one in Bay 1 and one in Bays 4 and 5.
It is suggested that this barn was constructed around 1800 as it does not appear on a late 18th century plan of the Roudham Estate. The re-used timbers have been roughly dated to 1550 to 1700 and they may have come from Roudham Hall (NHER 58775), which was extensively rebuilt in the second half of the 18th century.
