1854. Casual observation.
Five gold coins of Edward III were recovered by workmen whilst laying a drain in Ber Street, near Mariner's Lane.
The initial report to the Norfolk and Norwich Archaeology Society (S1) describes them as Ryals or double Nobles. Obverse: The king in a ship, with drawn sword in his right hand and a shield with the arms of England and France in the left. The gunwales of the ship contain alternative lions and fleurs-de-lis.
Reverse: highly ornamented Cross fleury with lion sumounted by a crown in each quarter and the letter 'E' in the centre.
The observse on the majority of the coins gives the title "King of England, Lord of Ireland and Aquitane", but one of the coins gives the title "King of England, Lord of France and Ireland". The title lord of Aquitane was omitted and in 1336 and although the title King of France was assumed at this time, it was omitted on coins until 1369 and therefore it is believed that the coins were deposited sometime after 1370.

July 2022. Enhancement.
In the past there appears to have been some confusion regarding the exact location of these finds. The First Edition Ordnance Survey map (S3) records their location as in the garden of Ber House (see NHER 6 and NHER 26275), approximately 90m to the south. A silver coin of David Bruce, King of Scotland was found on the grounds of Ber House in 1843 (S4)(S5), but contemporary accounts (S1) clearly describe the gold coins of Edward III as having been recovered from the street near Mariner's Lane.
