NHER 60070 (Monument record) - Former grounds of Burgh House

The former grounds of Burgh House (or Burgh Hall), 19th century home of the Lucas family. 19th century maps indicate a plantation belt around the perimeter of the site with lawn and freestanding trees within. A map surveyed in 1905 also shows a pheasantry to the north of the site, along with a group of buildings to the north of the house, probably of horticultural and equestrian use (see below). The grounds later formed part of a Bygone Village Experience museum until c.2005 however have now been developed for housing. Some elements of the park's framework remains.

April 2012. Trial Trenching and Building Survey.
An archaeological evaluation by trial trenching was carried out within this site in April 2012 at 'Phase 3 and Phase 4, The Village, Fleggburgh'. No significant archaeological remains were recovered. A basic building survey of a complex of buildings within the proposed development site identified only 1 building of potentially later-19th century date. The remainder were of early 20th century date with later modifications.
