Full Description
This is the site of the Dock Hotel. According to (S1) it was built around 1872 next to the new Alexandra Dock, it served both British and foreign sailors. It was purchased by the King's Lynn Corporation in 1961 and was demolished to enable road widening. Photographs show that it was a two-storey red brick building with a slate roof.
According to (S2) this building was damaged by enemy action three times during the Second World War, on 13 March 1941, 10 November 1941 and again on 22 July 1942. (S2) also suggests an earlier origin for this building. (S3) records that it was first The Ship from 1746, was renamed the Billender in 1822, and the Ship Billender after 1861. According to (S3) it became the Dock Hotel around 1872.
The building shown in old photographs of this site appears to be 19th century.
