Full Description
July 2019. Breckland National Mapping Programme.
A group of probable boundary banks, at least some of which are of post medieval date, is visible as earthworks on imagery from a lidar survey (S1). Some of the banks are depicted on the First Edition Ordnance Survey 6-inch map (S2); more minor boundaries (such the boundary of Cocksfoot Clump) which are visible on both the lidar and the historical mapping have not been mapped by the project. Some of the boundaries appear to be associated with blocks of ridges, reminiscent of ridge and furrow, which could relate to temporary arable agriculture, growing fodder crops (as took place within Breckland’s warrens) or previous plantations of forestry. As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2015), it is probable that the earthworks still survive. The group includes a bank partially recorded during an earlier field survey (NHER 62030).
