Full Description
Previously recorded under NHER 46565.
(S1) in file shows a grand double jettied house with carved statues and medieval shop fronts, probably late 15th-early 16th century, formerly on site.
E. Rose (NLA), 2 November 2006.
At the south-east corner of High Street stood a fine three-storeyed timber-framed house which was reputed to have been owned by Walter Coney, a prominent late 15th century merchant. In 1804 it was owned by John Coward, a brazier, who received compensation for relinquishing 28 square feet to the street. This is a small amount of land and probably represented rounding off of the corner without the demolition of the whole building. Shortly before 1816 Samuel Newham, the Paving Commissioners' surveyor, bought the property from Coward's widow. Newham demolished the building and offered the Commissioners 58.5 square feet of ground for road widening. The resultant new building (NHER 46565) was constructed with a rounded corner.
