Summary

A World War One memorial in the form of a bronze Celtic cross on a three-stage octagonal base which stands in the churchyard of Walpole St Andrew (NHER 2227). This memorial was designed by architect Oliver Hill in 1920 and is one of his earliest surviving works in England. A plaque was later added to commemorate the fallen of World War Two. The memorial was Listed in October 2004.

Location: Churchyard of St Andrew's Church, Walpole
Description: A three-stage octagonal base carrying a bronze in the form of a celtic cross. The cross carries a low-relief inscription on the lower arm (see below) and a decorative design alternatively described as celtic and Art Nouveau. The side and upper arms of the cross have been described as 'cusped and foilate'. The material and design are unusual. It is one of the earliest surviving works of architect Oliver Hill in England.

Constructed/Sculpted By: Designed by Captain Oliver Hill, architect. Constructed by Messrs Broadbent of the Kupron Works, Clerkenwell. Erected by Messrs A. J. David and Son of Wisbech.

Inscription:
Lower inscription (lower or long arm) - 'YE THAT LIVE ON MID ENGLISH PASTURES GREEN REMEMBER US -AND THINK WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN'
Upper inscription - 'TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN LOVING MEMORY OF THE SOLDIERS OF THIS PARISH WHO DIED FOR KING AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918'
Rear includes 21 names of war dead.
A further plaque was added inscribing 5 names of those who fell in the Second World War.

May 2002. Field observation.
The Great War memorial was observed within the churchyard. It takes the form of a metal celtic cross with an imitation pattern of confronted animals including cow, pig, sheep, goat, and passant horse and dog. A plaque was added in memorial of those in the Second World War.

Listing Description Excerpt:
"War Memorial. 1920. Captain Oliver Hill, architect. Made by Messrs Broadbent of the Kupron Works, Clerkenwell, and put up by Messrs A. J. David and Son of Wisbech.
Bronze in the form of a Celtic cross, on three-stage octagonal base, each stage having stone paving over brick. Cross ramped up at foot."
