Full Description
September 2021. Aylsham and Brampton Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
An extensive area of Second World War military training can be seen as earthworks on aerial photographs and visualised lidar data (S1-S5). The features consist of a range of military training features including, explosive carters, practice trenches, possible silt trenches, probable gun emplacements, a pillbox, a firing range with associated structures (NHER 53138), vehicle tracks and trackways. A lozenge shaped ditch feature and a ditched enclosed area (with a square of low vegetation in the centre) can be seen in the north of the site. The exact function of these features is unknown, and they may have related to possible targets or emplacement sites. The military training features can be seen clearly as earthworks in the 1940s (S2-S3), with some of the features levelled by the 1960s (S4) and others seen surviving as low earthworks on the recent (2017) visualised lidar data (S5). Due to the density of the military training features the site has been mapped by extent. Previous field work surveys have been undertaken in the area and identified a number of earthworks relating to the military training features (NHER 32499, 53004, 53006, 53014, 53047, 53049, 53050, 53051, 53052, 53054).
