Location

Map sheet TF72SW
Civil Parish CONGHAM, WEST NORFOLK, NORFOLK

Map

4 January 1978. Stray Find.
Found on surface:
1 Palaeolithic flint handaxe. Grey flint with yellow patches, 15 cm long. See drawings (S1) and (S2).
Information from (S3).
This object is described on (S4) and in (S5) as a pointed handaxe in sharp condition, though slightly damaged by fire. It is unlikely that this fire damage was ancient as according to (S4) it was found near a number of "pot boilers", suggesting a much more recent fire.

In (S5) Wymer also records a second handaxe found a little way to the west (TF 713 232). However it is clear from (S4) that this is actually one found to the south which is recorded as NHER 15632. These finds are also noted in (S6) and (S7), which both repeat some of the errors in (S5).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 8 December 2013.

Middle Saxon brooch formerly said to come from this site is in fact from NHER 3562.
