NHER 13612 (Monument record) - World War One airfield

Airfield.
3rd class landing ground 1916 to 1918. Informant states that the farm was bombed in a Zeppelin raid presumably aimed at the airfield.

Bearing in mind the occurrence of circular marks on such airfields, and the known example of NHER 13549 where the mark is definitely the landing mark for aircraft - and noting the width of the mark in this case, an airfield identification seems more probable than a Bronze Age date.

Shows two more circular features to southeast of that described, but one is remarkably small and could be a military feature; the other could well be a frost polygon. Neither is the normal type of Bronze Age ring ditch.

Two of the ring ditch cropmarks previously recorded at this site are now recorded separately under individual NHER numbers (NHER 43538-39). The third possible ring ditch, located at TM 3096 8831, is of natural origin. Although it is possible that two ring ditch cropmarks could relate to the World War One airfield, the presence of a dispersed Bronze Age barrow cemetery to the southwest (NHER 43540, 43610-2) means that an earlier origin is much more likely.
