Summary

A medieval moat and a medieval/post medieval trackway are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. The platform inside the moat survives as low earthworks. In 1979 medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds were found in the vicinity of the moated site. Subsequent metal-detecting at this site between 1995 and 2020 recovered prehistoric worked flints, including Neolithic and Bronze Age scrapers; Roman, medieval, medieval/post-medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds; a medieval tile; undated copper alloy casting waste; Roman, medieval and post-medieval coins; a medieval jetton; post-medieval tokens and a range of other, undated and Roman to post-medieval metal objects. These metal finds include an undated lead spigot; Roman brooches; a Roman/Early brooch; an Early Saxon brooch and buckle; a Late Saxon harness cheek piece; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; medieval harness mounts, horse-harness pendants, a pendent bell from horse harness, probable dagger-scabbard chape, copper alloy seal matrix, copper alloy rivet, lead weights and lead pot mends; medieval/post-medieval rumbler bells, a thimble or sewing ring, shoulder bolster from whittle-tang knife, sheet skimmer fragment, possible sheet reinforcement from rim of vessel or bucket, copper alloy rings, copper alloy vessel fragments, lead weights and lead window came fragments; post-medieval furniture escutcheon plates, clapper bells, mounts, a furniture stud, coin weight, casket key, crotal bell, sword-scabbard chape, sword-belt mount, harness mount, French Napoleonic military badge, copper alloy apothecary's weights, lead tobacco jar or spur terminal, lead cloth seals and lead window came fragments. Much late post-medieval material has also been noted at the site Of particular interest is a copper alloy rod with apparent traces of silvering at one end that may represent Roman metal-working debris associated with the production of the 3rd-century coins known as barbarous radiates.
