NHER 16794 (Monument record) - World War One pillbox

Summary

A rare World War One pillbox has been identified on aerial photographs from the 1960s and ground survey in 1980. It is believed to date to around 1916 to 1918, and is one of two such structures (the other being NHER 28842) identified in the immediate area.

Full Description

Near Thorpe Lodge.
Pill box. Ivy covered. Inf Pillbox Survey.

Confirmed; circular, concrete.

(S1) states that this structure dates from World War One.

NMP mapping has led to the alteration of the centre grid reference for the site from TG 2409 3439 to TG 2410 3535.

The circular pillbox described above and believed to date to World War One is visible on aerial photographs (S2-3). It lies 45m to the south-west of a second pillbox which is likely to have been contemporary (NHER 28842). Both structures may have been sited to guard the road junction between them.
