Full Description
1973. Earthworks. Enclosures and trackway leading towards moated site. Shrunken village?
Plotted by A. Gregory (NAU) from aerial photographs.
A. Walker, 12 March 1981.
On NAU aerial photographs these may be simply drainage marks, though some at north end might be earlier than rest.
E. Rose (NAU), 2 August 1983.
April 1985. Visit.
Land now ploughed up and under crop, so could not be walked. Discussion with farmer and examination of old Ordnance Survey maps at farm suggests that these are mostly drainage. Sinuous southeast to northwest line is relatively modern drain from old pit. Marks at right angles seem to be drainage.
However marks at north end field seem to include former linear waterfilled pond (see 1926 25 inch Ordnance Survey; (S1)). There is a possibility this might indeed be a moat. Pond now incorporated into the drain.
Mark north of road in park seems to be old channel draining into moat NHER 3511. Now also ploughed out.
E. Rose (NAU), 17 April 1985.
5 October 1997. Metal-detecting.
Medieval and post-medieval coins.
Post-medieval jetton.
Medieval buckles.
Undated weights or whorls.
See lists in file.
A. Rogerson (NLA), 1 November 1997.
2010, before 24 Jan 2011. Metal-detecting.
Late Bronze Age dagger scabbard chape, (S2).
See description in file.
A. Rogerson (HES), 14 June 2011.
