NHER 1770 (Building record) - St Margaret's Church, Burnham Norton

Late Saxon round tower with round headed windows now edged in brick.
Tower arch shouldered, with another blocked doorway above it.
Later gargoyles on tower parapet.
North aisle and parapet early 13th century.
East end of south arcade about same date, but two west bays later, with octagonal pier.
Aisle west windows Y tracery of about 1300.
Early Decorated clerestory.
Chancel has 2 lancets on north, 2 Decorated windows on south.
South door good early Decorated.
North porch with blocked windows, headstops, marks of an outer gate, and marks of a higher roof line on aisle wall.
Decorated chancel arch, damaged by screen corbels for rood beam over.
Aisle windows late Perpendicular with stepped castellated transoms.
Modern small east window.
Roof simple on solid arched brackets, possibly 18th century.
Rood stair, with old encaustic tiles, now containing various carved fragments.
Corbels for staues each side of chancel arch, and at southeast corner north aisle a deep recess, and simple piscina.
By north door a restored Decorated piscina and wafer oven.
Norman font with simple decoration.
Rood screen of 1458, painted but defaced, full of beetle.
Pulpit of same date, paintings recently well restored. Also a Georgian pulpit.
Wall paintings above chancel arch and at east end of north aisle.
Parclose screens between nave and aisles erected in 1890s when congegations low, but probably older.
Good 17th to 19th century floor tombs.
Good early 19th century commandment boards.
Brass matrix.
Royal arms George IV, and also Charles II repainted for William III found underneath them.
Chalice 1708, paten 1762, paten and cover 1787.

Note that the 15th century pulpit paintings are a reminder to pray for the soul of the donor, a reminder that such memorials were not confined to brasses.
