Full Description
10 May 1983. Negative site. Vacant site in village centre, adjacent to church.
Watched during cutting of foundation trenches for evidence of early occupation.
Site formerly occupied by RAF camp, and said locally to have had cottages on it pre war.
Well still marked on (S1).
Part of retaining wall north side said to be remains of outhouses. Excavations revealed average 0.75m good topsoil over natural yellow clay. 19th century sherds, tile, brick mixed up in topsoil to its base. Only small patch of flint foundations remained of cottages. Much flint brick etc found reused as RAF entrance road. Indications are that site was well bulldozed when camp erected. Levelled again in about 1958 when camp removed. Topsoil imported from elsewhere.
Visited by E. Rose (NAU) 10 May 1983.
