NHER 23345 (Monument record) - Roman settlement and Early Saxon cemetery

Summary

Fieldwalking and metal detecting in advance of the construction of Dickleburgh bypass has recovered several Early Saxon brooches and other personal ornaments suggesting that this site was an Early Saxon cemetery. Other metal finds indicate that there was settlement here in the Roman periods and possibly earlier - many coins and brooches have been recovered including a bronze coin minted by the Cantii tribe in Kent in the Late Iron Age. Medieval and post medieval metal finds including buckles and pottery have also been recovered.

Winter 1986 and April 1987. Fieldwalking of bypass line 'Field 6'. Six 50m sections.
Sandy to gravel light soil, low cereal.
Concentration of Roman greywares and tile
Worked flint
One ?Early Saxon sherd.
Medieval- post medieval pottery.
