Summary

The medieval moated site of the old hall, which was demolished before work began on Melton Constable Hall. The moat is shown on an estate map of 1674 after the old hall had been demolished.

Moats broad about 6m waterfilled, some tree growth in moats. Banks scrub covered in many areas.
Under stewardship, scrub will be cut and poisoned, some tree surgery to overhanging branches. Removal of top leaf detritus to be undertaken with watching brief.

May 2001. Site visit.
Scrub clearance and tree surgery undertaken as part of stewardship programme. Moat dredged to make 1.2m (4ft) after discovery and removal of World War Two bombs by army. Silts spread around moat and ploughed in, will be seeded with grass. Old World War Two hut demolished and used to heighten low access ramp. 70 course shrubs planted to replace cut scrub - shallow rooted. Land drains and exit drain control water levels.
