Summary

This church has a Norman tower base and north wall. The chancel dates to the 13th century whilst the south aisle, arcade, chancel and tower arch are late 14th century or perhaps 15th century. There is a rood screen with painted panels and a fine set of medieval benches. Excavation beneath the organ in 2001 suggests the area was restored and rearranged in the 19th century. Medieval and post medieval bricks and tiles were found.

St George's Church.
Norman tower base and north wall, with reused fragments elsewhere. Chancel 13th century. South aisle, arcade, chancel and tower arch late 14th century or perhaps 15th century, perhaps going with clerestory, fine nave roof and north windows, or these may be later 15th century. Top of tower perhaps 16th/17th if not 14th; roof suggested as reconstructed in 17th century. Good painted rood screen; fine set of medieval benches; altar slab. Unusual chancel sedilia and very good aisle piscina. Fragment of possible cross in yard.

May 2001.
Further investigation suggests top of tower and chancel southeast window are around 1300. South aisle probably slightly earlier than chancel arch. Excavation for new organ base produced evidence for 19th century reordering, also medieval and post medieval bricks and tiles.
E. Rose (NLA), 21 May 2001.

This is one of the sixty five Norfolk churches selected for (S2).
