August 1997. Desk-based Assessment.
Impact assessment of proposed development at the Vancouver Centre.
See report (S1) for details.
P. Watkins (HES), 9 April 2015.

November-December 1997. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed Vancouver Centre redevelopment site (Trenches 2a and 2b).
These trenches produced a brick surface which was thought to be the remains of either a modern conduit of the Purfleet or part of an air raid shelter. Further to the south a sequence of silt banks of the Purfleet were discovered and these were found to contain 18th and 19th century clay pipe stems. The post-medieval bank sealed an eroded timber structure, thought to be part of a revetment; unfortunately there was no dating evidence associated with this structure.
See reports (S2) and (S3) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S4).
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2022.181).
E. Rose (NLA), 3 February 1998. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 9 April 2015 and 5 December 2022.
