Map

3 February 1986. Field Survey.
19th century barn constructed of flint nodules with brick quoins, corbelling and dentilations. The collar truss roof is hipped on the northern and southern ends, covered with red pantiles and the interior is lined with thin wooden battens. The building interior was originally partitioned, possibly with a wooden partition, with a loft at the northern end. The western wall has a pitching hole opening onto the yard associated with the Bullock Shed (NHER 63706), while the eastern wall has a brick-arched full-height double opening. This opening was partly blocked with the later construction of the stables (NHER 63705) and eventually fully blocked with breeze blocks.
It is uncertain whether this building was originally constructed as a barn because of its 'small size, single main opening and batten lined roof' (S1) [1].
An Early to Middle 19th centry date is suggested for the construction of this building as it is shown on the 1835 map.
This building is part of a larger farm complex, see NHER 50517, NHER 63705, NHER 63706 and NHER 63707.
See unpublished document (S1).

The current resident [2] of Poplars Farm suggests that this building has always been a barn. It has a southern double doorway that was later blocked with flint and brick, being replaced by a single doorway and window. The breeze block fill of the eastern double opening is thought to have been inserted in the late 1960s.
