Summary

This is one of a pair of 15th century limestone corbels described as having been set into the wall at the north entrance to Walpole St Peter's churchyard (NHER 2227). The corbel is described as a square section of masonry carved in the form of a crouching grotesque and was Listed Grade II in 1987. A visit to the site in 2002 found no sign of either sculpture and indeed verified that the current entrance gates to the churchyard are at the east and west, but churchyard clearance in 2005 revealed the brick plinths and sculptures which are now isolated amongst gravestones. See NHER 65651 for the sculpture on the adjacent pier which formed the former entrance.

May 2002. Field observation.
During an investigation of this site in 2002, it was noted that there is no north entrance to this church and no such carvings on either the east or west entrances. It was initially suggested that these carvings may actually relate to Walpole St Peter church, but there are also no such features there.
See unpublished report (S2) for further details.
H. Hamilton (HES), 13 May 2022.

March 2005. Field observation.
The listed scupture was located following churchyard clearance. The former entrance to the churchyard is located on the edge of garden of the house to the west of the churchyard and had become completely overgrown. The pair of carvings are set on low brick plinths which are now isolated amongst graves.
