Summary

The foundations of a large building were encountered at this site during ploughing in the 1970s. It has been suggested that the foundations could be the remains of a Late Saxon or Norman church, possibly St Mary's at Doughton (NHER 14898), but it is more likely the remains of a substantial farmhouse.

Map

1970s. Casual Observation.
Large foundations were encountered whilst ploughing north of Doughton hamlet (now mostly demolished).
It has been said locally that it may have been the remains of 'a large Saxo-Norman church' but the origins of this interpretation are unknown. If the foundations were the remains of a church, it could be Doughton Church (see NHER 14898), but the overall identification and this attribution is very uncertain.
It could equally well have been some domestic building, such as a large farmhouse.
