Summary

This 18th-century former tithe barn to the north of the Old Parsonage House (NHER 69686) was apparently used as a school from 1760 to 1825. It has brick walls with honeycombed air vents, a large off-centre doorway in its western, roadside elevation, two other, blocked doorways and a pantile roof. This building was converted to residential use at some time between 2011 and 2016, along with an adjacent, more recent single-storey storey outbuilding that had been used a piggery.

Map

Tithe barn c.50m north-west of Old Parsonage House (NHER 69686). Also included in this record is a single-storey former outbuilding immediately to the north that had previously been used as a piggery. This structure can be clearly seen on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map (S1). A similarly-aligned building of roughly the same size is shown at this location on the earlier Edgefield tithe map (S2), although this is depicted as an 'L'-shaped structure, with an additional section adjacent to the road.

September 2011. Building Survey.
Condition survey of the barn and adjacent former piggery building ahead of the proposed conversion of these structures to residential use.
It is noted that west flank and north and south gables of the barn are constructed of soft red bricks in Flemish Bond. The east flank has a more random construction with flint in the lower sections and the brickwork more randomly bonded, with some 'brick-on-edge' coursing - it appears to predate the other walls. The roof is covered in pantiles and comprises three principal trusses with substantial tie beams at eaves level, between which are secondary trusses with collars but no tie beams. Some repairs were evidence to the most northerly truss. The former piggery building to the north is of more recent date and comprises a low, single-storey, flint-walled building with a pantile roof. Parts of its walls contain 20th-century blocks.
It was observed that the barn has suffered quite severe deformations, with cracks forming in the corners where the roof trusses have been inadequately restrained and have exerted lateral pressure onto the wall head. Other defects noted included the deterioration of roof timbers and masonry due to water ingress resulting from displaced roof tiles. Although the roof of the former piggery building is largely sound it was noted that it would be difficult to adapt to the proposed conversion due to its shallow pitch, which is below that now recommended for pantiles.
See report (S5) for further details.
