NHER 2465 (Monument record) - Site of East Hall manor

Moat (Ordnance Survey).
Close inspection was not possible, but it remains in pasture, interior covered with trees.
Ordnance Survey card says that south side has been damaged by dyking.
To the south of the dyke are undulations in the grass.

19 December 1995. Site visit.
Moat island unmanaged woodland, with several fallen and mature trees.
Ditch, once fed by stream (Captain's Run) to south, well silted.
Pond in centre of island linked to south arm by silted channel.
Earthworks noted to east, west and especially to the south.
These should be surveyed.
Dead timber on island to be cleared soon, and some of the large trees felled in due course.
Some silt to be removed, with NLA guidance.

1996. Earthwork Survey.
Earthwork survey identified probable outer enclosure and subdivision of the area to the south of moat.
See report (S1) further details and copy of plan (S2). The survey is also noted in (S4).
B. Cushion (NLA) January 1996.

New owner has carried out de-silting of moat.
Some material has been deposited alongside the north edge of the stream to west.
Further material has been spread over fragile earthworks to west and east of moat, suggested as remnants of outer enclosure by Brian Cushion (NLA).
A large mound of excavated silts heaped to north of moat, where a rubble/gravel farm road has been constructed from B1507.
This material to be removed from site.
A small new 'moat' has been constructed to west surrounding a small island.
A few small trees/shrubs have been planted on large moated site.

Site scheduled 1999.
(S3) states that this is the site of the medieval manor of East Hall, held by William of Warenne in 1086, before passing to the de Cailly family, then the Clifton family, and finally the Willoughby family, who held the manor until the late 16th century.
(S3) also states that the small sub-rectangular pond in the centre of the island may be a 19th century garden feature.
