Summary

In 1936 rabbits burrowing into this site unearthed large quantities of Roman pottery and metal working waste. Finds recovered at this location from 1970 onwards (mostly during metal-detecting) include a Neolithic flaked flint axehead; additional Roman pottery sherds (one a fragment of samian pottery made by Alpinus, with an otherwise unknown stamp design); Roman coins; a Roman copper alloy pin and military jock strap terminal and a medieval brooch.

1936. Stray Find.
Roman site identified 1/4 mile [0.4km] south of milestone 4 on main road. Extends 50 yards [46m] in each direction (Context 1).
Pottery sherds from burrows. 2nd to 3rd century AD (forty rims). Bigger jars. Roll rims over 2.5cm (1 inch) across.

Samian base of Alpinus (AL.PINIM). Lezoux fabric. This is a new stamp of Alpinus; of seven known stamps from four dies, six are in Britain and the other Clermond Ferrand Museum. One is in a Piercebridge context suggesting date around AD 60 to 200, so firmly Antonine and probably mid to late Antonine.
