Summary

This medieval half octagonal moat with an L shaped outer enclosure surrounded Bokenham Hall that was owned by the priors of Buckenham. The interior of the moat has now been covered with farm buildings. The earthworks of likely associated drainage ditches, boundaries and pit features are visible on aerial photographs from 1946. These features have subsequently been levelled.

The moat is depicted on (S1) as a half-octagonal inner moat with an L-shaped outer enclosure. (S2) shows that the inner enclosure has been destroyed by farm buildings.

(S3) shows moated enclosure as a pond, and the wet ditch as a detached boundary feature. The small moated enclosure shown on (S4) has been filled and levelled. The wet ditch, shown as 'moat' survives.

The earthworks of two medieval moats and likely associated drainage ditches, boundaries and pits are visible on aerial photographs from 1946 (S5-S6). The majority of the features are subsequently levelled (S7) and have now been partly developed over. The L shaped moat or outer enclosure still appears to survive as a low earthwork on visualised lidar data from a survey flown in 2017 (S8). A section of the octagonal inner moat (see above) was visible as an earthwork on S5-S6 centred at approximately TF 9235 0988 with the second L shaped moat or outer enclosure (see above) also visible centred at TF 9232 0985. To the west of the moats, a series of ditches, banks and pits were visible which likely related to drainage ditches and boundaries associated with the moated manor site.
The monument polygon has been amended to the extent of the features as visible on S5-S6
