Gabled wings with varied fenestration, and pinnacles.

Excellent quality of interior carving.
See (S1).

(S2) dates it to 1720.
E. Rose (NAU) 12 January 1981.

(S3) notes alterations by Soane 1789, and says the 1843 architect was Blore, the 1856 building was by Teulon under Buxton.
However (S3)'s statement that nothing survives of the pre 1856 house except a fireplace is shown to be wrong by (S4)'s photograph, which shows how the 1843 building remains as one side of the present ensemble.
(S5) states there were further alterations by Green in around 1900.
In Hatfield House is a 'pair of gloves left behind by Queen Elizabeth I on a visit to Shadwell Lodge, Norfolk'. If correct, does this indicate a 16th century house on site, or does it refer to site NHER 6088?
E. Rose (NAU) June 1981.

13 May 1994. NLA air photography.
Photos showing great house and service buildings etc built around courtyard.
Cropmarks of garden features are clearly visible.
