Description

This survey was undertaken in response to a Norfolk County Council Historic Parkland Topic Paper (published in September 1988 as a Draft for Consultation as part of a Countryside Strategy) which outlined current pressures on these sites and included a map study indicating that 51% of parkland and garden sites had disappeared within the past 100 years. In response, a series of surveys were initially undertaken by a Manpower Services Commission team and the Centre of East Anglian Studies (CEAS) at the University of East Anglia and later continued by Dr. Tom Williamson and Ms. A. Taigel of CEAS. Documentary research and, in most instances, site surveys were carried out for a total of 75 sites. Summaries of this work including a graded assessment of importance were published as an "Inventory of Historic Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest" and full reports were prepared separately for each site. A further 13 sites were identified as not in the inventory and awaiting survey. A site number has been arbitrarily assigned based on the order in which the summaries appear in the Inventory report. 70 summaries are included. A further 4 sites are noted as having been surveyed and were assigned numbers 71-74.
